I have decided that this would be a perfect screencast. I have just completed making a proper video and I'll probably have it posted later tonight. Look for it soon.

Excellent. Thank you.

Pay close attention to the last steps in the video. You need to convert the stroke to a path in the end and then it will "straighten up".

Thanks, but my edges don't turn out straight.

Sorry, but there are eight nodes. which ones?
And what do you mean by stroke caps?

Drawing a perfect circle (hold the control key down when you drag).
Add a stroke and change it's thickness to suit.
Remove the fill.
Convert your stroke into a path.
Select your node tool, select your circle.
Hold your shift key down and select all 4 nodes.
Find your "break path at selected nodes" button and click it.
Now select an individual node and delete it.
Continue doing that around the circle until you are left with a quarter shape.
You may have to change the stroke caps to get a flat.

I realize that, but that is not as precise as deleting nodes. Is there a way to delete nodes from a circle and not have a complete circle left over?

There are many ways to do this kind of thing. You can for example do that via clipping... or convert the stroke to path and then use boolean ops (E.g. Path->Intersection together with a rectangle over the part you want to keep).

I want to know how to make an rss icon. I found the following tutorial, but it is for illustrator and I'm not sure how to do it in inkscape. I am having problems with making the waves from a circle.
