There's been a system-wide cull of menu icons in recent Gnome (and hence, Ubuntu) releases. I think the "logic" is that if they haven't got icons for
every menu entry, then they shouldn't have icons at all. Personally I think it's a misguided policy, as even a few icons (especially if they're on the frequently used entries) can make it much faster to locate the option you are looking for, without having to parse the text.
