There's been a system-wide cull of menu icons in recent Gnome (and hence, Ubuntu) releases. I think the "logic" is that if they haven't got icons for every menu entry, then they shouldn't have icons at all. Personally I think it's a misguided policy, as even a few icons (especially if they're on the frequently used entries) can make it much faster to locate the option you are looking for, without having to parse the text.

Anyway, the solution you're looking for is here: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2009/10/miss ... armic.html

You only need the first section to get menu icons back - and they reappear without even having to restart Inkscape :D

How can I get icons to appear in my Drop-down menu: (File; Edit; View; Layer, Object; Path; Text; Filters; Extensions; Help) ?

Here's how my File's Dropdown Menu looks like:

In contrast, notice the icon in Step 3a of http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... eLogo.html:

Import the bitmap using the Import dialog (File → Image Import...).

Please advise.
