Many people work on Inkscape all the time. They are all volunteers, since Inkscape is free-open-source-software (FOSS).

Re: Different line width by path segment

Ponny, I am reporting the stroke issues as a bug. They may not get fixed for some time. Perhaps you can try the suggested workaround of setting the transforms to optimized. If you get an extra node(s) follow the process described above, or share the file for examination. For a simple explanation of ...

Even if they technically qualified as bugs, they probably wouldn't rate as a high priority.

(I haven't seen a great demand for such oversized strokes, myself.)

Re: Different line width by path segment

Yes, there are two issues: Stroke scales unequally: this can be resolved (as demonstrated above) with setting preference to "optimized" transform. If "optimized" generates extra nodes, they can be removed (as demonstrated above): select overlapping nodes, remove segment between t...

Can you describe or show exactly how the above drawing with extra nodes was made?

Re: Different line width by path segment

Most interesting.

In this case, the extra node can be removed by deleting the segment between the stacked nodes and joining.

(Seems I can attach svg. Maybe you can also?... XML will need to be zipped.)

Re: How to avoid distortions with Stroke to Path?

The separate paths convert stroke no problem. So the compound path nodes must interact in stroke conversion. The more nodes, or at least more nodes in the compound path near the intersections, the more accurate the conversion likely will be. https://dl.dropbox.com/s/6g4tvd4pg3zh7y7/2017-10-17_10-24-...

Here (Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06) Win8.1-64), the grouped path object's stroke is increased, like the rectangle object's path. https://dl.dropbox.com/s/th1z8iwy15rctsq/2017-10-17_07-52-19.gif Transform of just the object has no strok...

Re: Different line width by path segment

Yeah, that's weird... the scale transform adds a style including stroke, which gets inherited by the descendants.

This happens to grouped objects.

Maybe the object somehow gets changed to a group.

Please share an example file, or a screenshot of the object's nodes. Also, please let us know what the setting is in the preferences: Input/Output>SVG Output>Numeric Precision. My poor simulation won't show the issue: https://dl.dropbox.com/s/bm858m274ey0m2a/2017-10-16_07-49-39.gif

Re: Strokes become spiky - why?

Was this a trace of a bitmap? It might help to simplify the paths (or parts of them) before stroke to path.

Feel free to attach/share an example file.

I'd set the numeric precision to 8, in preferences... Last button on the top right. Look for SVG output.

Then try the drawing.

Sorta begs the question, do you want overlapping objects to have the third color..

If not, maybe for a few items:

Inkscape opens in the last zoom level, depending on the setting in the preferences.

These three buttons in the top toolbar are your friend:
