Re: PDF output is slow to render

Actually, I don't even need to clean the document (I do that reflexively/compulsively). Just saving a copy as PDF (v1.5, raster=300, doc pagesize) makes a pdf that opens instantly. I see the OPs svg file is made with Inkscape version .91. The generated pdf shows Cairo version 1.11.2. Might be good t...

I simply used the "clean document" operation and the exported pdf opens instantly.

Re: From FreeCad via Inkscape to a plotter (*.plt)

Yeah, not too sure about that workflow... I made a SVG>HPGL>PLT round trip back into Inkscape and there seem to be a lot of extra paths right on top of each other. :-/

Re: From FreeCad via Inkscape to a plotter (*.plt)

Some issues in the svg:
Pattern fills cause failure (see in browser)
Title block and border cause failure

Might dig deeper, but that will take time.

Re: How to get image to display at correct size

As Druban points out, there is pixel size, print size and and screen size. In Inkscape, I work in the units used at the destination: px for displays, inches for printing (I'm USA), metric for engineering. The PNG export dialog in Inkscape allows setting the DPI. Printers frequently allow setting the...

FWIW, it opens within reason in Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Re: Invalid XML file

You can rename (or delete) the xml file. Inkscape will create a new one with default settings when started next time. (I would rename it "problemPrefsXML.svg" and post it up here for examination.) Did you have a crash, or did your antivirus update recently while Inkscape was open? Anything...

Re: black rectangles that show up in the icon preview

One way to find mystery objects is to use Menu: View>Display Mode>Outline. There might be empty flow-text objects, or other non-contributing objects.

As stated above, sharing an example svg file would help us evaluate.

Maybe the ai file wasn't saved with the pdf embedded? (According to the save options provided with illustrator, you can save ai files without a pdf double embedded inside -which is the only part inkscape can open since the other part is a proprietary format) related link http://www.inkscapeforum.co...

Your browser might need a plugin. Most browsers support the format. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebP#Support

Clipped twice should not be an issue... a test on random objects here worked.

my test of the original image is here.

Re: Clipped Images Are Still Acting Unclipped (Kind of?)

I can clip the shaded object without issue. I changed the z order of objects slightly so that I could group some bits, but other than that it works as expected. But, I'm also using an older version: Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1 Example.svg_-_Inkscape_2019-02-23_19-18-56.jpg I...

^^^This is like the perfect first post.^^^ No problem saving a copy as pdf here, using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1. There is however, one bogus object you might delete: path18771. Maybe that is choking the pdf on your version? ZeroSizeCircle.png Another observation... since ...

Re: Object Manager Mysteries

Well, at least the XML option is there for those who prefer to see the gears inside the box. The layers and objects dialogs were clever and necessary to satisfy the folks seeking the familiar. Imagine the flames from the critics if Inkscape had no layers. You CAN please just about everybody... it ju...

Re: Object Manager Mysteries

The confusion lies with using a command in the Layers menu... if an attempt is made to "Move selected objects up one layer". That's the only way to get that message ("no more layers above"). Using the green arrows or the stacking/z-order is appropriate there. Again, to reduce typ...

Re: Object Manager Mysteries

all layers are sub-layers of root. If that's what the root layer is, then it ought to be displayed that way, in both Layers and Objects dialogs. As it is, the root layer is a mystery for most ordinary users. Consider the Layers and Objects dialogs AS root. The problem is allowing the object manager...

Re: Object Manager Mysteries

It depends how you want to move items "UP". "Root" contains all objects and layers/groups (similar to <body> in HTML). Therefore, all layers are sub-layers of root. An object can't be moved UP into a sublayer from its parent using the Layers menu. In the attached image below, the...

Re: Font Variants

Keep in mind, Inkscape follows the conventions of CSS and SVG, so variants outside of those conventions may not work well or not at all. For example, SVG and CSS only supports nine weight variants, the numbers 100, 200, …, 900 but some faces have a weight of 1000 (as supported by FontLab).[3] Since ...
