Re: Place central node in a line

The Insert key is a keyboard shortcut for the Add Node button. To be more specific, that operation adds nodes between each pair of consecutive, selected nodes. So if you want a bunch of equally spaced nodes, you can press Insert over and over, doubling the number of nodes each time, and they'll be e...

Re: help w/gradient applied to group of circles

I haven't investigated this issue myself, but if it only happens with clones, it's probably not a bug. Clones always display the fill and stroke properties of the original shape unless the original's are set to Unset . In other words, if you change a fill or stroke property on a clone it will ignore...

Re: Smart guides in Inkscape?

I think you'll find the snap settings in the document properties to be the closet thing to Illustrators Smart Guides. I'm not sure there is a hotkey to toggle snap, but in most cases you can hold Shift to temporarily disable snap. There is a shortcut to turning snapping on and off: % (Shift+5 on mo...

Re: My ideas for Inkscape

These all seem like fine ideas. Here are some comments on individual items. These comments all relate to the dev version. I'm not sure which features are in 0.46. 3. You can make the palette multiline. Look for the small arrow to the right of the palette. Click it, and a menu opens up. At the top of...

Re: Inkscape license

Yes, it is. The license only refers to redistributing Inkscape itself, the application. Any images made with it are automatically copyright by you (at least in the US); the GPL license doesn't apply to images you create. You can do anything at all that you want to do with them. Or maybe you're refer...

Re: Rotating center positioning

But I need to get that + precisely in the center so I can make it symmetrical to the other one. Is there a way I can move it to the center or write the coordinates manually? When aligning things symmetrically, the easiest way I've found is to make another object that is the exact size you need for ...

Re: Interlinked text

To make things look interlinked, you have to use some tricks. What you're going to do is use an object and a clipped clone to make it look like a part of one object is going over and then under another one. http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9295/step01a.png First, get your letters into their position...

Re: Path Effects

The outlined path thing (shown in the image below) would be absolutely trivial (and very nice to work with) if there was a way to have a cloned path that could have its own Stroke, but it seems like editing the Stroke on a cloned object have no effect. The visual attributes of clones (fill color, s...

Caps Lock is an abomination. That's why right-thinking keyboard users everywhere change it to be Ctrl: http://blogs.sun.com/edwingo/entry/chan ... s_lock_key

Re: Changing current node position while draging bezier handles

There's no way that I know of to do this at the moment, but that would be a nice feature. I'll hunt around on launchpad and add a feature request if it doesn't exist already.

Edit: Feature request submitted: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/383906

Re: Word Wrap in a Circle

I'm not sure which manual you've read, there are a couple floating around out there. However, there is a section that specifically talks about putting text on a circle here:

Check out the bottom of the page.

Re: Select Last 'Items Selected' and Undo

As far as I know, there's no option for this, although I've also wanted it. There is a work-around for the grouping example you gave, though. After realizing you missed an object for the group, instead of Undo, you should Ungroup ( Shift - Ctrl - G ). That will remove the group, and select all of th...

Re: selecting using a circle marguee

I'm pretty sure the question is asking if, when dragging to select objects, can the selection marquee be a circle rather than a rectangle. The answer is no. When selecting multiple objects with one operation, there are only two ways: drag a selection rectangle, or use Alt and draw a "selection ...

Re: Dash lines convert to rectangles when Stoke to Path is used?

Unfortunately, there's not an automatic way to do what you want. It would be nice if stroke to path had an option for creating a line path rather than a shape path, but currently it doesn't. However, you can achieve the effect you want with some effort. Here's how. Easier way, if you don't need the ...

Re: Blur-feather-& beyond

You can't do accurate feathers in Inkscape except on circles, or by spending a ton of time. That's because you have to use a mask with a gradient that follows the outline of the shape. It's an often requested feature, but Inkscape can't do it yet, as far as I know. (Because SVG doesn't support it, I...

Re: Copyright and securing files

The only way digital security like this can "work" is by controlling every point of the process. For example, Flash files are "secure" in this way, because only Adobe makes Flash file editing tools, and only Adobe makes Flash file viewers. The advantage to Flash authors is that A...

Re: Copyright and securing files

An SVG file is just a text file, so there's no way to "lock" it so that it can't be edited or used in whatever way someone wants. Anything you'd try to add, like a watermark for example, can just be removed. You can put license and copyright info in it, but it's up to the user to respect o...

Re: Root Layer? (=Rooted Layer?LOL)

I'm not sure about the renaming thing, that does sound like a bug. Regarding deletion, though, I guess there's just not a check in the code to prevent deleting the last layer. Maybe someone doesn't want any layers, why stop them? Although I can see maybe asking for confirmation or something. The SVG...

You can do this even easier if your mouse has a middle button. Middle-clicking the fill or stroke color boxes in the lower left corner removes the color from that feature. Ta-da! One click color removal.
