Re: Keyboard shortcut for a specific color

I can see the value of the keystroke access. I'd check into custom mapping. From the online manual: You can change the keyboard shortcuts used by Inkscape by editing or replacing the file share/keys/defaults.xml. There are a number of alternative shortcuts available. To use them, simply rename the f...

Re: Editing maps

Hello, I opened the file in Inkscape. Then it was simple enough to save as an inkscape file and ungroup the image... all the countries are identified in the xml, so the xml editor can be used to select a country, use the "zoom to selected" button and then the view is oriented where you mig...

Re: newbie wanting to use screen sharing to learn

The tutor running UVNC viewer should be fairly safe, provided file-sharing is used with caution.

Re: newbie wanting to use screen sharing to learn

UltraVNC is free and can be used on Windows machines. I would have the student establish the server and allow the tutor remote control.

A single object can clip a group of objects, if that is the goal.

Re: Thoughts on Inkscape Compared to Illustrator

I enjoyed reading the article. :) I will concur that it would be nice to have more z-axis controls in a tree, but as noted, that could also be overwhelming to occasional users. (See Corel) I suppose one could adopt a workflow where a new layer is added (Ctrl+Shift+N) before creating any object, so a...

Re: MAC 10.9 Can not save after creation (.ai)

Hi,

You might try renaming the .ai file to .pdf, before importing to Inkscape. I realize that might mean re-doing some work, but might be worth a try.

Ja, like the example linked, I'd duplicate the sun and clip it with a path that follows the sun's edges where the orbit crosses. In layman's terms: take a piece of the sun and paste it over the orbit. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/imvortjajve7uex/orbit1.svg Feel free to download this image and...

I looked at the file in Textpad... I don't believe it's recoverable. It's 100% null characters.

You can probably upload to an online sharing account like Google Docs or Dropbox, then post the link here. (Ensure the file permissions are set to anyone with the link.)

Re: Bohr cover made with the help of Inkscape

Well done! I visited the blog post, and noticed in the comments about Inkscape: Once I was done with placing all the atoms in Illustrator, I realized something—I needed to rotate the electron on the atom model. You’ll notice that the electron is at the “one-o’clock” position on all of the atoms. I n...

Re: Exporting high quality images to PDF

With embedded images, it might help to check the resolution of the bitmaps and set the size of the Inkscape document accordingly.

e.g. 8.5"x11" at 300dpi... 2550x3300

Qs:
    Which OS/version?
    Which version Inkscape?
    Any antivirus programs running?
Are there embedded bitmaps? Or linked?
Can a file be created, closed and re-opened at all?
Will a "plain" svg copy fail also?
Can you post a sample good file and a sample bad file?

I would think the size and resolution of the original artwork would make a difference, hence the suggestion of a sample... but, if that's unnecessary let us know how it goes.

Well it sort of depends on the destination... web, print, etc., then set the document size accordingly.

e.g. 8.5"x11" at 300dpi... 2550x3300

Re: Image sizing question

Enlarging bitmaps (jpg, png, etc.) will always lose resolution. There are a finite number of pixels with picture information and they can only be guessed-at when scaling to a larger size. Other programs like Gimp or Irfanview might have a better/faster scaling algorithm, so I'd explore scaling the b...

Re: Image from svg. not matching grid

What size page are you trying to achieve?

Currently, the page is appx. 27" x 35".

If you want 8.5" x 11" (or whatever), you can resize the page in the Properties menu, group all your objects and scale them to fit.

When exporting, try the "hide all except selected" checkbox.

The artwork needs some cleanups, but the elements can be exported with transparency, as shown.
