Another fast/dirty is to export a checker pattern and modify in GIMP (whirl, skew), import modified png and embellish.

Re: 2 minor alterations?

This will look strange online in this reply, but open the file in Inkscape, it will be more clear... This task is not much different than any other desktop operation: edit, copy (or "clone") and paste. In Inkscape, the file now has circles added to a group of objects. The group can be &quo...

Re: Mysterious missing text objects

A little more digging... Inkscape seems to freak-out badly when Arial Narrow is set to bold. Other fonts seem ok. Using a text editor (textpad, etc.) to replace "Arial Narrow" with "Arial" in existing SVG files resolves the issue here. (There are some other anomalies in the test ...

Re: Mysterious missing text objects

My system shows the issue.

I haven't got it sussed as yet... some manipulation of the style attributes helps, but nothing definitive.

I'd try exporting the image from CAD as a DXF, to see if it converts the text to paths.

Re: Outset Rounding Edges

Ah-ha. Offhand, if I were trying to replicate the character of the lines, I'd try laying out guidelines and draw straight lines, then convert the strokes to paths and tweak-tool the paths to expand like the ends of the original raster. Then I'd fill with gradients to approximate the fade in the line...

Re: Invisible Lines that I can't find for the life of me.

That looks like what I see when opening Inkscape SVG files in Corel. :(

The original file looks fine to me in Adobe Reader when output as a PDF. I'd ask if that is suitable for them and specify to have them print from Reader and only the blue lines cut.

Re: Outset Rounding Edges

Did we get the correct image...?... it just looks like a few distorted corner ornaments or crop marks. (approx object size: 5733px x 1926px)

Maybe share a piece of the original raster?

Re: Spiro curves and half-smooth nodes

I can now confirm the issue... SHIFT+S makes full smooth, unless the node has at least one extended handle.

SHIFT+LEFT MOUSE DRAG on the node extends a handle, then SHIFT+S makes half-smooth.

Seems the behavior is SHIFT+Y... maybe the keyboard mapping is off. Could be a windows thing... maybe they got flipped somehow?

Re: Invisible Lines that I can't find for the life of me.

A few more thoughts: Seems the jobber is setting the machine for grayscale. Apples and oranges may be mixing here...? Color mapping seems exclusive of grayscale mapping, so if machine is set to grayscale (all the etching art is grayscale), all lines <0.3pt will be cut. Perhaps provide a file with th...

Ensure that snapping to nodes is turned off, and bounding box snapping should deliver the desired result.

Re: Troubles cutting out selected path.

It might help if you upload your svg to dropbox for us to examine. It isn't clear what foreground element needs to be knocked-out. For example, it the artwork includes a black shape with a green outline, maybe it's as simple as turning off the black fill. But, if the green outline is just an indicat...

Re: Invisible Lines that I can't find for the life of me.

Some random thoughts/Qs: Have you tried sending a "plain" svg or PDF? Are you engraving and cutting this image? Some laser cutters use line-width to identify a cut (e.g. hairline), so if there are line widths that fall into that range within the engraving content, a separate cut file that ...

Re: Troubles cutting out selected path.

If this is a page size mockup composed entirely in Inkscape, I'd just duplicate the background, clip it with the black rectangle and put it in the stack or layer under the square logo & widget.

If this is a webpage (not just a page-size image), there are a million ways to skin that cat.

Hi Mark,

I enjoyed reading the lock tutorial, and peeked briefly at the previous one. They are nicely done.

I looked for the vector art (or a link to it) , but only found jpegs on the pages. Would love to see the finished works in svg.

Re: XML measurement units

It could be the object has been transformed (scale, rotate, move, etc.), in those cases, the original object parameters may still show in the xml path, but the resulting values will be displayed in the Inkscape panels.
