Re: exporting to a bitmap with no bckgnd

As microUgly says, this doesn't require doing anything special. But be sure to use Export Bitmap to create the PNG file - don't use Save As Cairo PNG, as that produces a white background.

Re: Import TopDraw file

I doubt that anyone has written an import filter for this format. I notice that PC World still has the program for download (Top Draw), and says that it supports WMF. If that means it can export to WMF, then this may be your best hope of getting the files into Inkscape.

Make sure you're using Export Bitmap, not Save As Cairo PNG.

Re: Map - bitmap roads to paths

I've heard that AutoTrace can do this sort of thing. However, I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works. See also the earlier thread on AutoTrace.

(Actually, looking at the map more closely, I don't think this is very feasible. It would probably be easier to trace the roads by hand.)

Re: Inkscape for MacOSX 10.2.8 ...?

All versions of Inkscape back to 0.37 are available from the SourceForge downloads page. I'm not sure which ones work on OS X 10.2.8 though (maybe the release notes would tell you).

Re: saving as .wmf

I've just tried saving a simple image (a stroked and filled rectangle) as WMF and as EMF, and the resulting files look OK in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I haven't got Word, so I can't test them with that. If you could post an SVG file that you're having trouble with, together with the WMF and EM...

Re: Miter Not Exporting in Bitmap/PNG

I haven't seen this bug before, but maybe you could work around it by converting the stroke to a fill. (If the object already has a fill, this would mean having two copies of the object - one for the fill and one for the converted stroke.)

Re: Cambam to DXF to Inkscape?

Perhaps it's not a valid file? It's more likely that Inkscape's DXF support isn't very good. (The file loads without problem in Blender, for example.) I suggest filing a bug report . Since you can supply a sample file, and the file is very small, there's a good chance of this being fixed fairly qui...

Re: Inkscape can not read its own .ai file

Error: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway) I think this is the problem - Inkscape's AI import is only intended for AI 9 (and higher) files, which are really PDF. Older AI files are PostScript rather than PDF. For some reason, Inkscape isn't able to autodetect the version and use the appropria...

How are you exporting the PNG? Are you using "Export Bitmap" (the correct way) or "Save As ... Cairo PNG" (the wrong way)?

Re: cutting multiple images

Is it just the striped fish that get cut twice? If so, I think the problem is as I suggested above - some of the paths have a white fill. If you select one of these fish, you will see that the fill is indicated with a white bar at the bottom left of the window. Right-click on the white bar and choos...

Re: cutting multiple images

I have attached a png of the pic I am trying to cut, as I cannot upload an svg file here. I would need to see the SVG file though - I can't deduce anything from a PNG. One possibility is that some of your lines have a fill as well as a stroke. Even if the fill is completely transparent, its outline...

Re: Resize svg

That SVG file has (implicitly, by default) width="100%", height="100%" and preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid". This means that when displayed it should fill the viewing area, as far as is possible while preserving the aspect ratio. So the image doesn't have a specific size,...

There's no measure tool at present. But you can measure with the Bezier tool :tool_pen:: click and drag, read the status line, hit ESC when done (to avoiding drawing anything).

Perhaps you should give up trying to print it directly. Instead, you could export a PNG file of sufficiently high resolution, and print the PNG using some other software.

Re: Problems when I scale an object

Make sure you have your preferences set to scale stroke widths when scaling objects. This preference is in the Transforms section of Inkscape Preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P), labelled "Scale stroke width". It's also the first of the Affect buttons on the Selector toolbar.

Re: How can i create a racetrack?

It sounds like you need to increase the stroke width using the Fill and Stroke dialog (Shift+Ctrl+F), and then maybe convert the stroke to a path (Ctrl+Alt+C).

You can't create a 2-layer PNG file with Inkscape, since PNG doesn't support layers. (Of course, PNG is extensible, so people are free to define private chunks that specify layers. But Inkscape won't write such non-standard PNG files.)

Re: svg scaling in web browser

The "Optimized SVG" save option in Inkscape 0.47 does this, among other things. Only use this to save a copy for use on the web, not for your master copy (since it also removes all the Inkscape-specific mark-up). Alternatively, you can do it by editing the SVG file in text editor: it's jus...

Yes, but the way to do it depends on what operating system you are using. See the Inkscape wiki:
