Thanks. Coming up with new ideas (or new ways to re-hash old ones ;) ) is certainly the hardest part - nerdy Linux and tech stuff isn't always the easiest topic to extract jokes from!

Re: Make items same size: how?

Hai. Pls brief me the difference between Paste Size and Paste Size Separately . There's no difference if you only have a single object selected. If you have more than one object selected, however, Paste Size will set the size of the entire selection, whereas Paste Size Separately will set the size ...

Re: Elvie

Unfortunately not for the article. We had originally hoped to write it back in the Linux Voice days, and all their content was made available under a Creative Commons license after a while, but there's no such deal with Linux Magazine. The Elvie cartoons themselves are all under a Creative Commons l...

Re: Elvie

A bit of thread necromancy to let you know that our Elvie strip has now been appearing in print every month for 5 years! Initially it was in Linux Voice magazine, then that publication got subsumed into Linux Magazine (Linux Pro Magazine in the US), but they kept the cartoon running. To celebrate th...

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine

Full Circle Magazine #141 has Part 81 of the series, which demonstrates how to change the colour of an inline SVG file using the currentColor CSS keyword (actually, how to change one colour in the file - useful for icons, but not much else unless you want to get really sneaky with your SVG content).

... if I ungroup, modify and then group ... You may have very good reasons for this workflow but, just in case you weren't aware, you can "enter" a group and make edits inside it; there's no need to ungroup every time. You can use the options at the bottom of the right-click context menu ...

Re: Document Properties Not Displaying

I've recently found myself in a new job where I have to use a Mac, so have been bitten by this 'dialogs render off-screen' problem. I didn't find any of the workarounds to be particularly useful, so I created a script that will gather any errant windows and move them to the top-left of the XQuartz s...

Re: Export into PDF/EPS/PS creates an empty file

I posted it in reply to my first post already last evening but it did not show up. New users' first few posts have to be passed by moderators before they appear on this site - and that includes edits to already accepted posts. You just happened to post at a time when there were no moderators around...

Re: Selecting only one shape

My personal view is that it's okay to ask in more than one forum - after all, a new Inkscape user doesn't know what the overlap is between users of different fora, so might assume they're asking the question to different groups of people. Out of politeness they should perhaps link to the other posts...

Re: Is it possible to arrange all-upright text on a circular path? If so How?

Oh yeah the new arrange is very nice definitely the way to go if you don't want to keep text editable To clarify, the text objects remain as text objects and are still editable. It's just that they have to be separate objects so you have to edit each one individually, rather than dealing with a sin...

Re: Is it possible to arrange all-upright text on a circular path? If so How?

If each text element is a separate object, the Object > Arrange dialog can do the trick in recent releases of Inkscape. Turn the circle into an arc by using the handles to open a gap, then select the arc and the numbers before opening the dialog. Use the Polar Coordinates tab, and turn off the "...

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine

Didn't know that HTTP/2 is working differently in that respect - thanks for the extra info :D Yes, HTTP/2 opens a single persistent connection then multiplexes the requests over it. Since the main reason for image sprites is to avoid the overhead of opening a connection per image, there's no longer...

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine

The description reminds me of sozi: http://sozi.baierouge.fr/ JessyInk is the Inkscape equivalent to Sozi (which, in turn, is an Open Source version of Prezi). The tricks in the last couple of instalments have been about ways to show a subsection of your SVG image (either carved up by x-y location,...

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine

Re: Text box is "inside out"

To expand on druban's comment, "flowed text" is what you get when you click and drag with the text tool. It is based on an older SVG proposal that never made it into the full spec, so is incompatible with basically anything other than Inkscape. The recommended way to create text is to simp...

Re: Transparent background LOGO

I'm normally used to working with CS Photoshop so the Inkscape program is different for me. Although Photoshop has some vector capabilities it's primarily a raster program - which goes some way to explaining why your SVG file contained a raster image. Inkscape has more in common with Adobe Illustra...

Re: Transparent background LOGO

Unfortunately there's not a lot I can add to my instructions in the earlier post without seeing the original Inkscape file. I can only assume that either: a) the Inkscape file has a non-transparent object in the background, b) some other application in your workflow is making it non-transparent, or ...

Did you ever figure this out? I've watched multiple videos and even followed the instruction from the other user and still had no luck. There could be a number of reasons for it not working. Re: Transparent background LOGO

If you're using a recent (>0.90) version of Inkscape then using File > Export PNG Image… should produce a PNG with a transparent background (although there is a small white rectangle at the bottom left of your design which might need removing). If you're doing that already and still seeing a white b...

Re: wavy text jumps around

Seconding Moini's comment, I've also seen this behaviour when using LPEs, and see it with the file TD posted. Even pressing the right arrow key immediately followed by the left arrow key results in the object ending up in a different position to where it started. This is on Ubuntu Mate 18.04 with In...

Re: Alpha Channel vs. Opacity

Be aware that they also combine. So you might have a group with two objects, separated from one another: one with full alpha, and one with it set at 50%. If you then set the opacity of the group itself for 50% the result will be as though the alpha of your original objects had been 50% and 25%. But ...

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine

It worked well enough when I tried it. The focus of the article is on doing the job by hand, so the reference to the thread and extension are more a case of "here's another option" than "here's what you should be using". No sooner had I posted about Issue 138, than issue #139 has...

Full Circle Magazine #138 contains part 78 of my tutorial series. This one describes how to create a self-drawing path with CSS. See this thread for a bit more about the technique, and a link to Moini's extension that will do the hard work for you.

Re: cannot draw perfect circles and squares even after pressing CTRL

Holding CTRL (not just pressing and releasing) while you draw constrains the shapes to integer ratios - e.g. 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 1:2, 1:3. For a circle or square it must be 1:1, which you achieve by dragging close to a 45 degree line from the start point. If you check the status bar at the bottom of the ...
