A Character Creator with SVG and Javascript

Postby djezer » Mon Apr 13, 2015 2:56 am

Hello Inkscapers,

I've been working on a project to help me create characters in SVG. I created this site last year:

http://charactercreator.org/

And I also have a male and female template with about a hundred positions (not all the position have all the clothing variants ). I also created a python script (not public yet, pm me for more info) witch allows me to paste the url (created when you make your character on the site) and ouputs a modified version of my template with the right colours and selection of clothing/accessories.

I'm hoping to continue work on it to get it to a stage where you will be able to download an svg of your selection straight from the site.

I'm open to comments and suggestions.

Looks like some nice work!

I like that you don't have to allow all kinds of extra scripts or accept cookies or download/install extra things, to make it work.

When you say you have about a hundred male and female positions, do you mean you'll be adding those soon? Or are those that we see now on the site?

The only negative part I can see are a lack of options for certain parts. Especially for the body type, it seems there is only "atheletic", and no options for skin color. It seems there are fantastsic details for some things, and only 1 or no options for others. For example, there must be 8 to 10 different head shapes, but no other positions beside "athletic". No options for slacks on women or jeans, or anything like that. (The female's dress option called "suit" only has the suit jacket, and no slacks or skirt!)

But overall, it seems like a successful project. I would only lack for more options for several certain things. Good luck with it :D

Thanks Brynn, I try to keep everything running on open formats/standards.

Nope, a lot of the work hasn't been pulblished yet. If I bring in the other positions at this stage, the lack of options will become more apparent. I'm looking to bring those in at the right moment.

Yes, I know! Same goes for body types, if I bring those in right now, the amount of drawings required will skyrocket real fast. I need to draw more options at this stage before I bring in extra body types and posisitions.

Thanks! Did you notice that you can copy the url and share your creations too?

No, I didn't see that. But here's one weird effect that I'm seeing. Every time I open the page, the model's skin looks darker. When I first visited, the skin was light, and looked like they were depicting white people. But now when I visit, they look black! I really have no idea what could be causing that. But I thought it would be worth mentioning. Maybe it's providing a random color every time the page is opened? Because if I open 3 different tabs of the site, I see 3 different skin colors!

I'm using Window 7, 64-bit, and Firefox, current version.

Yes, the skin color is random (from a list of skin tones) at the moment. I'm thinking of providing that list as an option instead of the full sprectrum of colors.
