Any alternative visual interface for Inkscape?

Postby Marcelo » Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:59 pm

Hi,

I was just wondering if there's anybody redesigning or trying an alternative visual interface for Inkscape. I mean different icons and palettes, basically.

I made Inkcape my everyday tool about two years ago, and I never got totally used to its visual style... always thought there's something somehow clumsy in it. I don't pretend animation, roundness nor transparency, but maybe smaller palettes (right side dock occupies almost third of my screen, it changes width depending on the palette called, effects editor is really huge, too much hard relieve emulation in general, etc) and some redistribution of their content.

As a shy approach I tried Tango icons. They give a more delicate, less contrasted look, don't they? (Don't know if I'm going to be able to recognize some icons from others on the fly, BTW). Whatever, I would like to learn about any attemp to change the look in a more general way, or maybe even test it.

Any recommendation?

Thanks.

Hi Marcelo,
Yeah, we get a really lot of messages about this. Recently I was excited to read this message though: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=8618 I have not ventured to try it yet, as I'm a little concerned about potential safety issues in changing global system settings, to change the appearance of a single program. But I'm doing some personal research, and trying to learn about gtk and what actually is a "runtime environment". I really would like to try it, once I'm convinced it's relatively safe.

Other than that, it's my understanding that Linux users can change the Inkscape icons (to Tango, if I understand correctly). Although I suspect there are probably more than one new feature requests at Launchpad, asking for a choice of themes/skins (whatever). Plus, here's this topic, which is related, that you might find interesting, if you want to try your hand at it: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8424.

So the short answer is "not yet" :D

Great intro!!!.
if you want to try your hand at it

You hit the nail on the head. I'm so much at level 0 in this subject as tempted to get involved. For the moment, I just wanted to make myself a panorama in order to consider a realistic possible way. I'm glad to know (though not totally sure yet) that there's something a non-programmer can do about the UI. Think all these links are going to trigger many new questions from me.

Thanks a lot.
