Newbie to Inkscape and installing on a Mac

Postby mrclarkman » Fri Jan 13, 2017 11:44 am

Hello! I am pretty sure I installed Inkscape 0.92 via the Terminal and using x11 and Macports, it sure took long enough and I can see that lots of stuff got installed into my mac running Sierra. The terminal window is a mile long and it looks like the install worked, but my question is... where is the application? I searched the whole hard drive and no mention of inkscape.app and nothing is in the Applications folder.

This is the first time I have ever used X11 and Macports and pretty much even the Terminal to a lesser degree. Am I missing something here?

thanks for any helps!

I'll be watching this thread closely for any responses as I may give macports and inkscape a try very soon.
I still use 0.91 on El Capitan (10.11.6) but usually, sooner or later, someone does a Mac compile and we Mac users will get to enjoy 0.92, hopefully.

Ideally, I would think that just typing 'inkscape' and <enter> on the command line in Terminal would get it started.
Although, you will probably get a 'command not found' error, which means you will have to find out the exact path to where it is and do a cd to that location and then try 'inkscape' there.

EDIT; actually, using 'port inkscape' <enter> may be the possible command if macports is installed correctly.

What did you use to search for it with ?
With terminal and down in X11 (XQuartz) many of files are hidden (start with a period) and won't be seen in the Finder.

Do you have 'Easy Find' ?, a free, really nice search App for Mac's.
It finds anything, even hidden files and shows you it's path.
Perhaps it can help and if/when you find '.inkscape' you could get it started.?
Hope this helps.

I don't have a link, but I think there's a way to get support for macports. I guess Inkscape gets installed using macports in the same way that other progras are installed. So it seems in this case like contacting them would be the best chance of finding a solution.

The link for Macports is simply’ Macports.org ‘ and everything that is needed to get started, can be found there.

At Macports.org there actually are existing projects for Inkscape 0.48, 0.91, and 0.92pre-4, but they are only in the ’source’ format, so each user would have to build the application for their own system using Macports.
Then there’s a whole separate process to make a dmg (disk image) which then could be shared by others.

There’s just so much involved.
To begin with, you have to understand how to use and get around in Terminal and that’s a whole project in itself.
Then, install macports, and try to make the port.
There’s a whole macports community there and I would imagine one could get some help along the way.

Macports claims to be “an open-source community initiative to design an easy-to-use system for compiling, installing, and upgrading either command-line, X11 or Aqua based open-source software on the Mac OS.”

Then, there’s the All Apple only method. Join the Apple Developers Community, Install & learn the free XCode (4-5 gig download) and there’s a project for you too. Yikes, where to start ?

I really have to add how grateful I am to even have the joy of using Inkscape.
It’s one of my favorite Mac Apps and I have had only Macs for 35 years.
The fact that it is basically free, is really quite amazing.
All the time and work done by only volunteers for all these years is remarkable, not to mention all the bug fixes and improvements along the way.
My sincere thanks to you all.

And, thank you Brynn for your helpful assistance all over the place.
I see your website has become a busy place and I visit there often.

Thanks GAngus. We're working to put them all together into one forum, but as always seems to be the case, working within a community is a lot slower than working alone. But, we'll get there :D

I am in exactly the same position as mrclarkman. I downloaded and installed Xcode yesterday, installed MacPorts and ran the sudo command that should install Inkscape with Quartz, it was still running when I left work. This morning, Terminal was back on the user prompt. I was expecting to find an Inkscape program icon in the Applications folder, but nope. I tried typing 'inkscape' in a Terminal window, as suggested by GAngus, and that worked, although I got a ton of CRITICAL messages ((inkscape:58500): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_convert: assertion 'str != NULL' failed) 'port inkscape' does not work, by the way. So I guess this is how it should work.
I now have another problem: my version of Inkscape is in French, and I can't remember asking for a French version. But that should go in another forum thread, I guess.

Seems Macports has a bug when used with osx "Sierra"...

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
