Pes files in inkscape

Postby arumba » Sun Jul 23, 2017 9:40 am

Hi I use inkscape a lot with my cutting machine and would like to know if it's possible to import my embroidery files (pes) formatting, into inkscape so I can cut applique designs out on my cutting machine.

It's possible to import a lot of different formats into Inkscape. I'm not familiar with PES file format. Is that a vector format? Ok, I looked it up. It's a Brother embroidery format.

So while that might be a dedicated vector format for the Brother embroidery machine, it probably will not be vector, when you import into Inkscape (assuming it imports at all). So you'll still need to either auto-trace or trace by hand, before you can send it to your cutting machine.

All I could say is just try it. File menu > Import and see what happens. If it shows up, look at the status bar. It probably will say "Image....." So you could either use Inkscape's Path menu > Trace Bitmap, or use the Pen/Bezier tool and trace it by hand. It depends on the complexity of the design whether hand tracing will be necessary or not.

If it doesn't import directly, there still are probably some ways to do it. Like for example, put it up on your screen using its own software, and then press PrtScr key, which copies the whole screen. Then you can paste that into Inkscape. Or it's possible the Brother software might provide export options, such as PNG or JPG. Then those certainly can be imported into Inkscape.

I think Embroidery software costs a lot, so this is an attempt to make creation of embroidery files affordable to hobbyists.

There is a developer working on an Inkscape embroidery extension. But I have no idea when it might be available in Inkscape.

There already is an extension which will prepare files for embroidery machines. But it's only the image that it prepares. It doesn't give instructions to the machine (such as stitch length or fabric type), which is where the bells and whistles are. Note, that's my general understanding and I probably did not use the proper terminology.

But, it's my understanding that someone is working on it. I've seen discussions on the mailing list about it. Actually that link v1nce gave might be it.
