Where did FEET go in 0.92??

Postby brucewestfall » Fri Aug 04, 2017 12:07 am

I do signs and car wraps and gym floor graphics. These are all drawn exactly to scale in Inkscape. No, I will not do it at 1/10...

Currently I have cm, pt, pc, px, in, mm

Of course, the only useful scale for me to use is inches.

Why did FEET get removed? I love all the updates and do not wish to revert. Just hoping there is a way to get it back.

Might be that "ft" as a unit-indicator is not part of the SVG spec...

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

USA! USA!
WE HAVE YUUUUUUUUGE FEET!!!
THE BEST FEET, PERIOD!

Um, but besides that, we're kinda stuck with them. We tried in the seventies to embrace metric... but instead we wound up with RonRaygun and trickledown kleptonomics.

Maybe as you are about to define the kg, you might switch to metrics?

If the unit "feet" is not in the SVG standards, then it will be harder to get it back (if at all). But it can't hurt to try. Here's some info about how to do it: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/ind ... opic=628.0

The other option that comes to mind, is that it might be possible for you to add feet back to your copy of Inkscape. I don't know enough about Inkscape's code to tell you how to do it. And I don't know how hard or easy it might be....or even if it's possible at all. But it seems to me like it might not be so hard to do. You could ask developers, either on the mailing list or maybe IRC (see the linked message above).

Other than that, I'd say your only option would be to use inches, and either multiply by or divide by 12 (depending on which way your calculation is going). As you may know, size is sort of irrelevant for vector graphics. So you can draw at any size, and only worry about the final size when you're finished drawing and ready to save or export.

I mean, drawing in Inkscape at that scale, you must have to be zoomed out, most of the time. Why not draw at 100% zoom. Then scale to the proper size as the last step? I don't know. I wish I had a better answer for you.

Considering Tav's comments in the linked report, it might not be problematic to restore feet to the gui. (There may be rounding errors when used.)

I'd submit a wishlist item to the bug list.

Thanks for all the replies. I personally HATE feet inch yd, 7/32, cup, pint, gallon. But I live here and have to deal with it.

To Brynn - At this moment I have up scaled images of an enclosed trailer. I am figuring each panel size to see how much vinyl I need to cover it without overlapping seams. For a project like this, I need everything at actual size from the beginning or I can accomplish nothing.
The current page size is 49039.16016 x 24118.88086 pixels...which means nothing.
Even in inches the size is 510.8 x 251.2. My slow old brain cannot figure what that is automatically.
Sure would be handy to see that its 42.5 x 20.9

My oldest gym floor job done with Inkscape was July 2007, so this is no new thing. Been doing this with inkscape for over 10 years now and it's frustrating to have something that worked fine (for me at least) removed with no option.

I don't see the need for developers to change if only a tiny fraction need it. Would be nice for that tiny fraction to be able to customize without bothering others. I've tried before to add my own plugin and change the gui, but failed miserably. (BTW, Looks like Inkscape maxes out at 158 ft x 65 ft on my screen, which is happily larger than most gym floors.)

I will never quit using Inkscape, just hoping to keep all the awesome new features but have the ability to use it the way I always have.

Or I could move to Belgium.

I imagine it would be almost trivial to include feet in the GUI.

If you submit a request on the buglist, I'm confident at least a couple other users will "Me too" the request.

Thanks to Eduard Braun who gave a perfect solution:

you can easily restore "feet" to the list of usable units
by modifying the file "/usr/share/inkscape/ui/units.xml"

add this below centimeters:

<unit type="LINEAR" pri="n">
<name>foot</name>
<plural>feet</plural>
<abbr>ft</abbr>
<factor>1152</factor>
<description>Feet (12 in/ft)</description>
</unit>

I also was able to remove those pesky logical and amazingly useful units I never use.

Now I don't have to move to Belgium!

Extra note: Don't delete the pixels definition or your zoom factor goes wacky!

I re-upped the bug report wish/request... while it's great there is a simple method for users to add those units (ft, m) I see no downside to having those in the GUI on the release versions, and hope they'll be restored.

My 2 cents - there are 12 inches in a foot, making each inch 0.08333333333 ft, rounded. Feet as a unit is not useful because to change the GUI to accept and work with a measurement like 3ft 2in would be horribly difficult, and 3.166666666667 ft is not practical to enter (as well as inaccurate). 38in is easy and correct, without rounding errors. this is the best compromise, IMO. If a user doesn't know the 12 times table - and there are many such - they have probably become so adept in the use of a calculator that this shouldn't be an issue.

No need to open the US vs EU can of worms - it always creeps me out how quickly that discussion becomes ugly.

Here it's worth noting the ability of 0.9x versions to perform calculations inside most numeric input fields - saves having to launch (or find) a calculator in many cases.
