inkscape logo

Postby Lazur » Sat Jul 21, 2018 11:08 pm

Took the majority and uploaded this to openclipart:

Since openclipart won't accept any non-public domain images, the inkscape branding cannot be added in any uploads.
Too bad there are key shortcut layouts with that logo added.

May that work as a substitute. It's too simple and generic for trademark claims right?
So will upload remixes with this square one logo.

Elegant :) What's this with 'took the majority' - has there been a voting of some kind?

No.
Had raised my voice that there needs to be some branding that could be shared at openclipart. If we think a side project of the inkscape developer team (Bryce) could announce inkscape related material -at openclipart- we need some images of the branding going well with the cc0 license...
and looking at the vectors team it was my intention that things are done only if you do them. Since noone else is interested in openclipart, that's why I "took the majority". It's non official as per se, but there is no approval system what should be called "official" either.

Honestly my 0.91 about screen image had the inkscape logo which is a no-go at ocal. (At the time there was no inkscape gallery and we needed to share the svg to the public... with a very few options this was the esiest to upload to.)
And recently the key-shortcut layout had been presented with the official inkscape logo -they both need to be hidden from the public of the pd issue. Thus we NEED something that can be used instead. Cheat sheets are more than welcome. Why shouldn't we have them just because we can't have a public domain branding double?
Hence this image in the original post came to life. Way too simple for trademark claims I guess, but the essence is there. (In that matter it's even more mature than the official logo. Have you seen affinity designer's logo? Or ai's? Now those are something sleek...)

Off topic:
re:inkscape vectors team: Haven't been following much the issues on gitlab of the team -since getting the e-mail notifications and there has beeen plenty of them. Either the information presented doesn't worth the mail notification or the conversation rather be presented in a forum instead... {[(Why not here?)]}
Have to catch up on that stream weblog series (?) but quite surprised it got the "official" tag whereas neither this forum, or Brynn's, or the facebook group got any official approval.

I think it's a good idea, Lazur!

I've heard you mention it at least twice (I think once at a Vectors team meeting and once at a board meeting). It's a important point.

After all, I had the impression that OCA was originally created, at least partially with Inkscape in mind. Yet the Inkscape logo can't be uploaded there. Seems odd.

How can we make official announcements on OCA, if we can't even post the Inkscape logo there?

As far as I recall, you had suggested creating some kind of special user account for Inkscape announcements, where those images don't take on the public domain license. Or there was another option, which I don't remember technically what it was, but it was something similar but technically different. Something about the carousel?

(yeah, I had to disable the email announcements from Vectors, because there was no way to filter them in my inbox)

What stream weblog series?

Something about the carousel?

The idea was to have a vectors team account where the uploader's name would verify the uploaded content is official.
You can't have a different licensing model.
The carousel gets the most attention so sticking images to it is the most ideal spot to aim for.
Currently there are very outdated stickies which may be ditched in the near future hopefully.
Openclipart is getting a "spring cleaning", currently there are some 70+ bugs to be adressed as there haven't been any update for years.

Haven't got a reply from the team if they could sticky a random user's upload or if it was only the user "openclipart" that had such an access -something like an admin?

What stream weblog series?

As far as I understood there is going to be a monthly video series on inkscape news. Nice idea. Was wondering why there haven't been an official youtube channel which could share *official* inkscape tutorials. Still my biggest issue with the project is getting the official sticker.

Ah, 'initiative', not 'majority'. Thanks for explaining, Lazur!

We do have an official youtube channel, which is this one:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKKj0F ... n4afabKvTA

Just there's nobody who can reliably take care of posting things to it. People are just too busy with making a living, taking care of their family and relatives, and all the other stuff they already do for Inkscape. No time left for additional responsibilities. It needs someone to step up and do it, just like you did now with the Inkscape logo on OCAL.

Gitlab is a convenient place for conversations, as it
a) is where devs hang around already
b) isn't too complex for non-devs to use
c) can link to code, can host large files, can do voting, can assign things to persons, and has a lot of additional features that are useful for organizing working in a team

video too fast for me

Postby Grobe » Mon Jul 23, 2018 6:50 am

I just had a look at the showcase for version 0.92 - maybee just me being slow, but - it goes way too fast to me for being able to follow.

Would love to see the same video with a speed adjustment :)

@Grobe: Youtube allows you to change the speed of the playback. Click on the cog wheel, then select a slower speed, e.g. 0.5.

(but yes, I found it too fast, too - just it won't be changed now, hopefully the next one will be slower!)
