SVG file browser

Postby qbit » Mon Dec 29, 2008 1:19 am

Do you think it deserves to request a SVG file browser in inkscape for windows users? Right now, the Open dialog is limited displaying the SVG files because the Thumbnails mode under WinXP does not allow to see a preview of more SVG files in a folder in the same time. So you have to select each file to see a preview of it. I know linux users are more happy in this area because they can use their file manager to see them. What do you think?

There aren't many windows Inkscape developers, and since there are alternatives you can use I'd rather developers work on fixing bugs and new features that don't have easy workarounds.

You can always switch to linux :)

Unfortunately, I can't switch to linux and I agree with you that the developers should fix the bugs, first. But maybe implementing this is easier than fixing some nasty bugs as time as the code to see the selected file is already available.

prkos, you mentioned alternatives. Can you be more specific? Right now I'm using IrfanView but the plugin for SVG files is weak. On the other hand, Adobe Bridge is not free.

I mentioned renesis player in the other thread http://www.examotion.com/

Do you know that you can have both win and linux on the same machine? I used it like that for a while to learn and get used to it before I switched entirely to linux.

Inkview also comes to mind thinking about this topic, maybe someone with more info can shed some light.

Thank you prkos. I found on that site a renesis plugin (643 kB) that allows win explorer to display the svg files in thumbnail mode. I just installed and tested it. Even if it is not very fast, it is doing well the job. In this case, the problem of exploring the folders with svg files I think it is resolved.

Just want to note that the Renesis pligin from examotion.com does not work with 64-bit Windows.

So "resolved" is not quite the right status for this issue, at least for those of us not using Linux or 32-bit Windows.

Feel free to request it but I doubt it'll get implemented any time soon, as this seems to be more to do with the operating system than the inkscape program. i.e. the svg thumbnail preview in Linux has nothing to do with Inkscape

Still, it can't hurt to request it :-)

You may want to use Opera SVG Viewer widget. You need to have Opera 10.50 installed to use it as standalone application or an earlier version to run it from inside Opera, but it's worth it - only 130Kb and perfect rendering.

Neat idea. Thanks for creating it.
