"No extended input devices"

Postby Cris » Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:34 pm

Hello all,

I have a tablet PC (HP TC4200) with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, where I draw directly on the screen using the stylus. I haven't been able to get the pressure sensitivity to work in Inkscape (it works OK on ArtRage for example), I can draw etc. with the stylus, just no pressure sensit.

When I select the "Input devices..." menu, I get the dreaded "No extended input devices", with OK button disabled and cancel button enabled.

I have the same problem in GIMP if that is relevant.

I searched / googled / etc. and found that many users have this problem with Wacom graphic tablets (intuos, graphire, bamboo, etc) i.e. hardware that you plug into a PC, but my setup is different, I have no "separate" tablet, mine is "embedded" into the computer / screen. Also most cases seem to be related to Ubuntu, which I don't use (I'm on Win XP)

What should I try to do to make it work? I tried on several inkscape versions including 0.47 pre4

:tool_spiral: Thanks in advance! :tool_spiral:

This problem is way beyond my experience. And you've probably already checked on this. But just to be thorough... File menu > Inkscape Preferences > Mouse > Use pressure-sensitive tablet (requires restart) checkbox

I realize you've said you're drawing directly on the screen, and don't use a separate tablet. But maybe there's some kind of relationship there :? ? In any case, I don't think it would hurt anything to try it -- if you haven't already. (GIMP Preferences has an Extended Input Devices dialog too)

On the other hand, maybe there's some fundamental issue with using Inkscape with Tablet PC os? If you can duplicate the problem on a different Tablet PC system, you might want to report the problem at Launchpad? Well, for that matter, why not search Launchpad anyway -- maybe it's already been reported?

I wish I could have been more help

Hey Brynn, thanks for stepping in, I didn't even know that option existed. Unfortunately it was already checked.

Yes, I can't get to it either, I get the same error message "No extended input devices" or some such.

Thanks for your tips!

This worked for me . . . getting my Bamboo tablet to work in Gimp, and getting past the "No extended input devices" problem.

Don't touch your mouse.
Use Pen only.
Try opening Inkscape or Gimp using the pen only.
Then, go to preferences and do the stuff,
File menu > Inkscape Preferences > Mouse > Use pressure-sensitive tablet (requires restart) checkbox
Gimp > Edit > Preferences > Input Devices > Configure Extended Input Devices, and Tah -dah!
