Outset Rounding Edges

Postby 64ozwaterclub » Thu Dec 12, 2013 2:38 am

I want to take a raster image (sketchy lines), convert it to a vector image, and thicken up the lines. I traced a bitmap using grays, 8 colors, and 8 scans. I ungrouped them and moved them apart. To make the lines thicker I'm using the outset path tool. It makes them thicker but it also looks like it's rounding the edges therefore making the finished product the same thickness. Anybody have any ideas to get around this? Maybe I'm using the wrong tools.

I've added my file.

Thanks,

Kyle

Did we get the correct image...?... it just looks like a few distorted corner ornaments or crop marks. (approx object size: 5733px x 1926px)

Maybe share a piece of the original raster?

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Here is the raster image. I had to remove some of the images from the test file because it was too big. The test.svg is the top scan of 8.

Ah-ha.

Offhand, if I were trying to replicate the character of the lines, I'd try laying out guidelines and draw straight lines, then convert the strokes to paths and tweak-tool the paths to expand like the ends of the original raster. Then I'd fill with gradients to approximate the fade in the lines.

There are probably better ways, so maybe some vets will chime in.

inkscape lacks an option to choose between round/square when offseting.

my advice : select your shape just add a stroke (shift ctrl F) of same color as fill, set its width to get the desired thickness and make sure to choose a square join in the stroke style (3rd tab)
