Any new info on font variants?

Postby cleversomeday » Tue Feb 02, 2016 2:37 pm

I am having issues with a number of my fonts not showing all of the installed variants in the Text and Font palette, and/or displaying one font variant on the canvas and listing another. I saw this tip viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16452&p=68600&hilit=variants#p68600 regarding hyphenated filenames, but it did not solve the problem in any of my cases. I can't find a common pattern in any of these except that they have variants with non-standard names. A few examples:
Bender Inline and Solid installed and showing in Font Book but in Inkscape, Bender Inline appears but only Bender Solid is listed.

Betterfly- 2 of 4 (Draft, Smooth, Swashes, Narrow) variants are missing from Inkscape list. 1 of the 2 matches its name, the other doesn't.
Breathe- Inkscape only lists Breathe Regular but displays Breathe Press
And there are many more.
Any insight, workaround strategies, etc, appreciated. Thx.

Hello,

Might be related to this font-family issue:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16600#p61549

Maybe requiring an edit of the problematic font properties.

I didn't delve into the properties edits, but maybe there are some clues there.

BTW, thanks for your posts on font creation, very helpful. :-)
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Font variants (separate font files for each style of a font family) are not the same as Opentype layout features (alternate glyphs within the same font file) - Opentype layout features BTW have landed in trunk by now (as an update to that earlier comment).

The question is probably about fonts which use style names/definitions which don't map well to the (fewer) CSS weights used in CSS / SVG (thus multiple font variants getting assigned the same CSS weight - which one is actually used seems to depend on the file name of the fontfile, and the local collation order).

Some of the issues are e.g. discussed here:

@ ~suv
Sorry, my bad. I`ve made a swift search and pasted the wrong link afterwards.
