Weird edges on shapes

Postby toxigames » Wed Mar 21, 2018 6:37 am

Inkscape version 0.91. The edges of shapes have begun being "distorted", if you take a look at the image below. These are all new objects created from "create squares" (F4) and "Create circles"(F5).

Why are the edges distorted like that? The vertical edge has larger width than the horizontal...?? And the cornes are sort of cut off...?? Both of this is totally puzzling me; I have not seen this before and I have no idea how it has happened or how to make it go away. I remember using Inkscape yesterday with this document, but I do not recall having this issue yesterday. But today it is suddenly there, so what on earth has changed?

If I create a new document and move objects there, or create entirely new objects in the new window, then the lines width will be normal again, but the corners will still be cut off no matter what I do. If I paste one of those objects back into the first document window the vertical edges will change into being wider, so it seems like whatever is causing the greater width is a document wide setting, while the cut off corners must be a program wide setting...

I have tried changing the buttons and settings for the edge/line path in the box in the top right corner, but none of it helps.

Also when I create a square and a circle, while I am dragging out the initial form the edges appear correct, but as soon as I let go of the mouse button Inscapes distorts the edges. The cut off corners are there all the time though so there are also cut off corners while dragging out the form.

I hope someone can offer some help or insight as to what is going on here.

Please share an example svg file...
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

Looks your transformations are set preserved instead of optimized in the preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P/behavior/transforms).

It was the opposite. They were set to optimized. Changing to preserved made the lines have same width all around the object. Now that issue is solved thank you!

But the problem with the cut off corners are still present. So I attached a sample svg, as requested. Thanks for helping out.

Yes , preserved Transforms are applied to the group.

Info here, among other discussion: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33071

Feel free to add your comments to the bug report in the linked topic.

The beveled rectangle corners are due to the miter-limit set to 0 in the stroke style... increasing the limit may resolve the bevels.

Thank you! I thought I had tried the miter limit; but when I did it now it worked, no more cut off corners.

Oh and now I need to change it back to optimized to make the lines the same again...? Before I had to change it to preserved to get consistent line width. Well, at least I know now to change it to the opposite if it happens.

Although objects that have been "messed up" with this cannot be fixed no matter what I do; so it seems some objects can get permanently damaged, because they keep having inconsistent width lines no matter if I set to optimized or preserved; that's a shame. What an annoying bug.

Looking through that thread you linked to, thanks.

It doesn't happen in 0.48; and I can even just load the same svg 0.91 saved file in 0.48 and the problems are gone, even the existing rectangles in that svg file that had problems are normal in 0.48. Guess I'll go back to using 0.48 then!

Ouch.

I will add a link to this post in the bug report. (I don't currently have a machine with 0.48 to test.)

Thank you for the info.

Mostly off topic:
Unrelated to this problem, but personally I've been thinking of reverting to 0.48 myself. Inkscape's recent development has added vital features which require much more technical expertise than I'll ever have. It's getting to the point where complete novices can't pick up Inkscape and stumble through on their own. I hope developers can make these features more user-friendly!

Line spacing now has a nice skull icon in master... for the setting that one isn't supposed to use (but setting that setting is actually not working very well, it always reverts to something else...)

Im switching a bit between them actually because I have an addon I often use that only works in 0.48 (it hasn't been updated for a long time, but it does its unique little job very well). 0.91 does some things better (but dammit I can't remember right now what these things are lol), but this issue here is to integrated in my work process to resize/transform objects and groups of objects where I always want to preserve line widths perfectly, and it seems I can only safely rely on 0.48 to do that.

I wish I had a .48 installed to test this, I can't escape the feeling that it behaved exactly the same as you're describing, grouped objects transform "insides" as well, and meter limit can be set to 0 for the same effect. I like having the flexibility of both options, and as previously linked and explained by tylerdurden, when working on single objects set the Transform preference to Optimized and the transform won't change the stroke width.

An extension that hasn't been updated can't be easily helped though, can you share which one is it?

I can, it's an extension that a user Simarilius made and then I modified it to meet my needs. It lists the node coordinates of a path. I couldn't figure out to make it process data correctly in 0.91, but I got it do it pretty consistently in 0.48. I know it all just comes down to understanding the data, but in the end it was easier for me just to make it work only for 0.48 (I spend quite a long time figuring it out, so didn't have much motivation to figure out to make it work in 0.91 now that I had it working fine in 0.48. And the core of the extension, the core of the data collection, wasn't even made by me ;) ).
