Seamless tiles for fabric design still getting lines between tiles

Postby sarahedgecumbe » Sat Feb 02, 2019 6:03 pm

hi folks.

Yes i'm fairly new to inkscape. I'm creating a seamless tile to create fabric. Loving the design process but i normally paint in regular oil paint.

I have watched a few videos on creating a seamless tile but when i save as a PNG and load into say TOYLES tile tester i'm getting little grey lines around each tile. They do not move away when i zoom in and out.

I understand this is sometimes a glitch in Inkscape itself... and sometimes these do zoom in and out of focus but i'm wondering if anyone has some "checklist" things for me to check. or settings to check or something similar.

I un-installed the old inkscape and installed the new version as of today. I also BLANKED ALL THE SETTINGs... so its a totally fresh instalation with no silly settings i could have mucked about with.

Basically my method is

1. new document
2. Create a filled square to use as a background (with no boarder around it)with set measurements say 200mm
3. Import and image that goes over the edge of the tile
4. ctrl+D and click transform and move it 200mm. (same as the background size)
5. reapeat steps above and fill in the center of tile
6. Ctr +D the background tile to the front.
7. Select everything and "clip" --> set
8. Group the images (should i have done this first? or doesnt it matter)
9. Export as PNG. Save.
10. drag into TOYLES tile tester and have the lines everywhere making it not seamless....

additional step.... if when i have my image and i'm changing a background or two.... if i create a new layer the same size as the one i have... set the x,y co ordinates to 0 on both of the images... technically they should line up right?

doing this shouldn't create this problem would it? I then needed to group the objects again.

Ive gone back in checked the measurements of the tile. Re-clips and set it. Still getting the lines

Anyone have any things to check?
potential problems?
anythings you can think about?

there must be a silly setting somewhwer that i'm just not getting. Or do you have a great video recommendation

many thanks for any help.

Hi.

By the thin line you describe it sounds like the "rendering gap issue" -a phenomenon present with all current renderers using anti-aliasing.
To avoid that you can pixel-fit your image to the exported area.
Say if you want to export to a 2000 px/2000 px area, make sure your exported object is exactly 2000 px /2000 px sized
-preferably having (0;0) and 2000;2000) as the bottom left and top right coordinates.

In general this approach can work only with straight horizontal or vertical edges.
If it was about using a seamless pattern in inkscape (rendering issue appearing on screen) instead of duplicating the base tile just convert it to a pattern fill and use it on a larger rectangle as a fill attribute.

Before you start, try Edit menu > Document Properties > Page tab, and near the bottom, uncheck "Use anti-aliasing".

The image that you import might look a little strange, but this would probably eliminate that line that you see in the "tile tester". I'm thinking that the image looking a little strange might not come through by the time it gets on fabric.

This faq item gives a few ways to deal with that gap. I'd suggest trying the Stitch filter, if none of the above helps (Lazur's or my first idea).

Many thanks for your replies.

sorry I was late replying with thanks. My topic took a while to be approved and i missed the email notifications. Grateful for your time and help

thankfully downloading the new version fixed the Toyles tile tester issue. Still getting the line in actual inkscape, and am playing with your suggestions. but i can handle this if it will work in print. (which it should)

many thanks for your time
