Getting inkscape to use an existing latex installation

Postby pking123 » Mon Apr 01, 2019 6:26 am

Hi folks:

For the record, I am using windows 7, and my latex installation is located on C:\texlive

I have a rather large LaTex installation which uses TexStudio as the editor. What I want Inkscape to do is to accept Latex syntax in the image editor, and render math equations and special characters with it.

I just installed inkscape, and it does not appear to notice texlive by default. The help page does not discuss what fixes you can do if the menu sequence "Extensions->Render->LaTeX Formula" doesn't work. I could see no reference whatsoever to Latex of any kind under the Render submenu.

However, I did find two references to LaTex under "Edit -> Preferences" and then in the dialog, another menu sequence: "Interface -> Keyboard Shortctus", which led to another menu in a subwindow, which had "Extensions -> Latex" or "Extensions -> Latex (no preferences)". All well and good, but mapping a key made it unresponsive (I mapped F5).

Anyway, any idea how to get Inkscape to talk to TexLive? I would prefer that then adding a redundant Latex installation.

I don't know much about using LaTex and similar programs, but I'm pretty sure you can't use just any program. You have to install the proper extension. Then it will show in the menu.

I'm not sure if the one you found reference to in the wiki is still available in the current stable version.

These are the extensions that I know about: (fork of TexText) (TexText), also ... n-inkscape (LaTex Text), also

Instructions for installing extensions: ... n-sets-etc (I can give you simpler step by step instructions, if you need them.)

The LaTEX extension does not work "out of the box" but needs some additional pieces of software to work.

Have a look at this link and follow the instructions found.

Please "chime back" if you are not successful. We will try our best to get you going.

Another good way to incorporate Latex in SVG files is python and matplotlib.

Google these to find examples.
Good Luck!
