Absolutely INFURIATING LINE HEIGHT & FLOW INTO FRAME GLITCH

Postby joebudden » Mon Apr 22, 2019 8:01 pm

Thank you for your free software, I have used it extensively with awsome outcomes.

Now, Firstly the line height being non existent is a real pain.
Here is the issue that I literally wanted to throw coffee at my screen. Flow into frame:
I could only get certain paths to work with this feature, so I created a frame by hand to simply wrap some text around a graphic. NO MATTER WHAT I DO!!! IT KEEPS RESIZING MY TEXT TO A HUGE FONT SIZE, then when I change the font size small again, it creates a huge gap between the lines, for which there is no line height setting known to me. I've been trying to get around this for about an hour and it is so infuriating and frustrating.

Also I created a line of text and it would only paste part of it into the frame at one point, and I tried several times, I have no idea what that's about.

Lastly it linked the flow into frame with a paragraph parially, but not completely, and when I copied that paragraph across the screen, it also had the half way linked shape of the path. Exhaustively, unbelievable mind bogglingly, pull your hair out, problematic.

It will be helpful for you to post your Inkscape version and system info.

It will be super-helpful to share the problem file, or an example file that exhibits exactly the same issues.

Line spacing is sometimes complicated. Maybe you have seen the release notes and the extensive related information.

Generally, it can be helpful to set the outer linespacing minimum to a small value and the inner to the desired value.

Flow text is special and comes with its own idiosyncratic issues, plus one very specific bug when converting to normal text.

Again, please share an example file for us to examine.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

I understand that you are frustrated. All your problems can probably be solved, but let's do them one at a time.
1. " it creates a huge gap between the lines, for which there is no line height setting known to me."

The box after Font size is Line Height. Admittedly it is glitchy in that it will reset to an unusable default between uses, but it is there, and functional.Hover over the question mark to see what it says if you have not done so. This is also often on but really better to turn it off.

I recommend you open a new document, use the text tool to create two short lines of text, adjust the font size and line spacing to your liking, turn off the question mark, switch to the :tool_selector: , delete the text object, and save the file as default.svg to your templates folder in your inkscape user folder.

This only took a few minutes, as an encouragement:

Lastly, flowed text is useful to design with but as soon as things are in the right configuration it should be converted to regular text.

Fyi, I don't even know if this is feasible. But I made a feature request to make this new line height thing optional. That way, people who want the old behavior, where we didn't need to worry about the line height, can live and work in happy ignorance. https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1716570

Oh heck, I don't read extensive anything. I just want single line spacing.

FWIW, as a pretty competent Inkscape user, I do consider the line spacing controls in recent releases to be a bug. It may not technically be broken, but it's also not clear and user-friendly, which I would say is a UI bug. I work with text in Inkscape all the time, and still find the operation of the inner/outer button and its interaction with existing text to be confusing (and that's without considering the also-confusing question mark button). I've lost count of the number of times I've ended up just deleting some text entirely and starting again, because no combination of those widgets seemed to get it back under control.

Whilst things may (perhaps) be 'working as designed', I think the number of times this gets raised, by newbies and more experienced users alike, suggests that the design itself may be flawed and in need of a rethink.

If you can help with that, Xav, please contact people in our UX chat channel. They are looking for ways how to improve it.

I understand it is confusing for many users, nooBs and veterans alike.

I'm not sure how the UI could be improved, but I can certainly state that more user-friendly explanations could reduce confusion.

We can discuss various text scenarios and ways to address them here: Text Line-Height controls: how to use

Things will change again with 1.0, and we will need more than good documentation - it would be best to have an intuitive UI. I added some links to the discussion, so you can see the current status.
