Add shapes to a group without ungrouping first ?

Postby v1nce_2009 » Wed Jan 27, 2010 10:33 pm

Hi,

How do one add a shape to an existing group without ungrouping ? (Ungrouping breaks the clone link)

I want to design a complex object with a transparency mask.
I designed two groups 1 will be the shape, the other will be the mask.
Then I cloned those 2 groups.
The I apply the mask clone to the shape clone and I get my final object.

I can deal with gradient and/or position of the items in the "original" groups and I can see the result in the final object. That's fine.

Now, I'd like to add a new item in one original group to get a more detailed shape (or mask).

If I ungroup first then the clone turns into a normal shape.

Any ideas, anyone ?

Sure. Double-click the group you want to add new objects to. That will "enter" the group. You can tell by looking at the layer selector in the status bar. It'll say something like #g3587. Now anything you draw will be added to the group. When you want to leave the group, double-click a blank area of the canvas. You can also enter a group by selecting it and pressing Ctrl+Enter, in case it isn't easy to click.

Thank you Kelan.
I'll use the groups far better now.

Another way would be to select the group, hold down the Shift key, select the new object, and hit Group button or Object menu > Group. There are situations where kelan's suggestion would work better than mine ;)

That can be useful, too, but will actually create a new group. So instead of adding the object to the selected group, it'll create a new group that consists of the selected group and the object. Still useful if that's what you want, though.
