comic book panels

Postby derek » Mon May 10, 2010 3:42 am

Hello, I'm making a comic in inkscape and already I have finished all the characters and backgrounds.
Now I'd like to make the panels. How do I go about that?

I imagine maybe I need a new white layer with rectangular holes cut out in it (so if I paste something below, it appears to be within the panel)? But how do I do that? "Clipping" will LEAVE rectangles in a layer not cut them...

Well I don't know. any Ideas?

If your comic frames aren't already rectangular, then you might want to use Clip. You could use a path operation to make a white frame. One large rectangle with the smaller rectangles arranged where you want each frame of the comic to be. I think you can only cut one out at a time, using Path > Difference, but with Path > Intersection, I think you could do them all at once, although I could be wrong about that. Please see the links in my signature to find instructional materials.

You might want to check out how Xav, et al, have done their web comic. They have a frame and border, and are really well done. This is a link to their topic here in these forums, but be sure to follow their link to their website. There you can download the SVG file. They put surprises in the SVG file that are not displayed in the posted web comic, so it's fun to search them out. Plus you might learn things about Inkscape in the process!

The squares in this example do not need any filling, you can set fill on the end result with white color when you have done the boolean operation.
So you can work with only stroke and see the illustration under this layer, or use fill and use transparency on object or layer, it's up to you.

On a layer over your comic.

#Do a square for the hole page.
#Do squares for every picture on the page, over the large page square.
#Select all the smaller image squares and: Path/Combine.
#Select the combined squares and the large square and: CTRL and - or Path/Difference.
