How do I open/save this filetype?

Since 3rd time is the charm, as they say....

Illustrator can open SVG files. So just save as SVG and open in Illustrator.

(If Save As Inkscape SVG gives you trouble, try Save As Plain SVG)

Or convince your client that an svg should equally work with illustrator...

("Equally" as if you don't use too much or filters at all. Illustrator lacks on them even more.)

anybody know how to create multiple pages or artboards in inkscape ?

You can save each page as a pdf then use pdfsam to merge them into a multi-page pdf.
