Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
I've got a bit behind this month, so two issues of Full Circle Magazine have come out since my last post:
Full Circle Magazine #115, with part 55 of my series. Lighting filters - the Specular and Diffuse Lighting primitives.
Full Circle Magazine #116, with part 56 of my series. The last filter primitive: Component Transfer (only available in the UI for Inkscape 0.91 or later).

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Nice!
Does it mean the next part will be about some more complex examples?

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
I'm afraid not. My filter skills are nowhere near good enough to produce complex examples other than by semi-random experimentation. The next part will be the last one on filters, filling in a couple of gaps in the coverage so far, before I move onto the next topic.
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
I see.
On the component transfer primitive it maybe worth mentioning that in 0.91 there was a bug on the transparent parts being transparent black (?) and that the component transfer can bring to unexpected results. Example case -add some blurring to the object, and after component transfer the alpha values to a higher slope.
(This had messed up some of my filters thumbnail at openclipart.)
Also that the component transfer itself is rendered rather inaccurately with current cairo.

Jonathan Hoskin has kindly taken it upon himself to extend the number of "Inkscape Special Editions" - so now you can read all the articles up to part 42 in 6 handy compilations, rather than having to download each magazine separately.
You can get all of them from here: http://fullcirclemagazine.org/inkscape- ... -editions/

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Hey, cool
I think we must add those to the Inkscape website
How large are the files?

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
The first two are fairly large - 8MB and 5MB. The remaining four were produced by someone else who has a different workflow, as the largest is 2MB (but the images are lower resolution).
I'm more than happy for them to be put on the website. There's no explicit license info in the last four, but I think it's safe to assume the same license as the first couple of parts: CC-BY-SA. Specifically, part 1 contains this paragraph:
So as far as I'm concerned you're welcome to put them on the site, but should probably at least include a mention of Full Circle Magazine, and a link to the original download site somewhere on the page.

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Xav, I rather thought of upping your quota and asking you to upload them yourself, in the tutorials section
(but for the quota, I needed a number)
You'd need to mention the licence version, though, in the description, as due to a bug, I can't currently add the newer 3.0 version of the licence to the website.
Would that be okay for you, too?

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
I've got a bit behind again, so two issues of Full Circle Magazine have come out since my last post:
Full Circle Magazine #117: Part 57 - Filters: Using "Background Image/Alpha" and chaining filters.
Full Circle Magazine #118: Part 58 - Some SVG and web politics, installing 0.92, and the "paint-order" feature from SVG 2.
Moini, I've noted your suggestion and added it to my ever-growing todo list, but I'm not sure when I'll get round to making any progress on it.

@Xav: do you have an account at inkscape.org? I could do it for you, but I'd like to see the tutorial linked to your account.

No, it doesn't look like I have. I do have one for wiki.inkscape.org, but that's not the same as a login for the main site.

(asking the obvious now, I apologize if this is impolite: Would you create an account? Or maybe you wouldn't like to?)

I'm happy to - I've just never needed to yet. I'll add it to the todo list

Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
I just tried to access issue #118 and got this message:
Code: Select all
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare add_js_scripts() (previously declared in /home/wp_9vxgtp/fullcirclemagazine.org/wp-content/themes/Newsmag-child/functions.php:9) in /home/wp_9vxgtp/fullcirclemagazine.org/wp-content/themes/Newsmag/functions.php on line 13
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
The website isn't anything to do with me, but I have sent a note to the editor of the magazine, just in case he's not already aware of the issue.
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
It appears to be back up now.
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Full Circle Magazine #119 is out, with part 59 of my series, covering Mesh Gradients. Given that I started with a "prequel" piece, this is actually my 60th article: I've been writing this column for 5 years now!
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Congrats!
and thank you, Mark!

Full Circle Magazine #120 is the 10th anniversary issue of the magazine, so I made a cake!

Full Circle Magazine #121 is out, with part 61 of my series. Over the next few months I'll be introducing some of the new features added with versions 0.91 & 0.92. First off, the Measurement tool.
Re: Inkscape Tutorial in Full Circle Magazine
Looking forward to that! I find it hard to use any but the most basic features of the Measurement tool. I think there might be a bug or 2.
Xav, you must end up making a few bug reports, while you're learning and researching?

I found the Measurement tool to be reasonably bug free - just not terribly useful, and a little clunky to use. As we both know, Inkscape is not a CAD program, and the shortcomings in the Measurement tool make that abundantly clear.
As for bug reports, I've filed or commented on a few, but not as many as I probably should. When writing an article with a looming deadline, I rarely have the time to isolate the cause or create a test case, so tend to just warn the readers that "here be dragons". Where I'm aware of an existing bug report I do try to include a link, so that readers can investigate further, and add themselves to the "affects me" list.

Made a Filtering Special edition from your series here.
May worth sharing at the other special editions too.
