Good work :) Nice colors, and I especially like the 'Ink-Scape' in the background.
Where did you meet him (or her)?

Now the 'critique' part:
The format is wrong, maybe you reversed width and height? Your 'signature' is also still missing.
I assume you already read the contest rules at https://inkscape.org/en/community/about ... -contests/

So: I like the picture, but it's currently not yet in shape for the about screen (also it reminds me a of the current one - that's not bad per se, but may reduce chances of winning). You could also try out 0.92pre, maybe, to see some of the new features. It's not a requirement to demonstrate them, but personally, I would preferably vote for a submission that also presents the new version and what it can do - I like llamas, though :)

thanks, met the lama at a paddock somewhere in the wilds.

yeah, the dimensions are accidentally reversed and the signature is missing but it's still a draft wip. also i've been reading the rules and i wasn't sure if i will measure up to all of them from the beginning, espc. the use of the new features as i am still using a stable ver. 0.91.

allright, thanks for answering straight away. i wasn't sure if i will submit the draft because of the lack using the new features and the style in the "tradition" of the current about - screen. i also have to admit that the last about screen with the halcyon was the first one i really liked. having a look at all of them since the beginning, they were not that inspiring until this one.

regarding the work hours i've been putting into the lama picture i wouldn't like to see it rejected because of the subjective criteria "not done with new features" and "style too close at the old about screen".

so it's pretty helpful to have some critical feedback before putting it onto the table with cc-by-attribution. i think i'll customize my local inkscape release with it and look forward to the submissions of other artists.

Hey, ha1flosse, that was only *my personal opinion* - I also wouldn't have voted for the kingfisher... I found it uninspired at the time, because it didn't have any specific relation to Inkscape - but liked the colors.
Did you see the other entries? None of them up to now uses any of the new features. You can't deduct what will happen from a single person's opinion ;-)
Of course I think you should try your luck - there are many more people who are invited to vote, not just me ;-)

(btw. is there anybody else not receiving any emails for updates? I didn't get any for a couple of days now.)
Update: just got one. Weird.

hey moini, i have no bad feelings about your opinion. the thoughts you mentioned fully reflect my thoughts and doubts regarding the submission of the lama - draft. so it's cool, i like answers that are straight away, thanks for your reply! you mentioned you wouldn't have voted for the kingfisher - i'm just curious, which art-style do you like in general and what would you vote for?

i've seen the other entries and it's pretty interesting to check out different viewpoints of other inkscape - artists just by looking at their work. i won't deduct from a single persons opinion but i think a single persons reflection on specific topic is not more or less important than the reflection of a group of people...

Okay, thanks, @ha1flosse, I was actually worried I had discouraged you - and that wasn't my intention at all. Still think you should submit something :) (Everybody should, really!)

Last time, I voted for #7 here: http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/journa ... -485998934 . I found it interesting (a lot of different things to look at), it displayed the advances, and it had this symbolic upwards arrow ;-). In hindsight, it's maybe a bit too 'kleinteilig' (detailed, many evenly weighted parts, nothing that really sticks out) to be a good About Screen. I also liked 6 (but those colors were a blocker for me), 8 (nice colors) and 23 (funny and inventive).

Admittedly, I never thought too much about art styles - it's rather a specific work that I like, or not, maybe an amateurish view. But I am an amateur ;-)
I value when it's funny, when there has some thought gone into it, when the colors are matching well, and are not too crass, or too dark (depending on the subject), when there's something in the image that I can recognize, and when it's not too sweet. All else depends on the purpose of the graphic ;-)

What about you, ha1flosse?

(btw. if you do submit something, the font for 'Draw Freely.' has changed, we're no longer using the non-free Pushkin handwriting, but Euphoria Script.)

i think the viewpoint you are looking at art doesn't really matter at all. who cares about being amateur or pro and who is determining what you are as an artist. like the wise saying "everything is art - art is everything", art has no standards. as long there is no judge determining art from a personal viewpoint, it is what it is. at the point where art is standardized and evaluated, there is always an personal opinion. i understand art as a pointing behind any personal view to what we natively are and maybe existence generally is - a source of endless creativity.

i'm not at deviant - art yet (still not sure about their policies) and haven't seen the submissions for the last screen, thanks for the link. there are some cool pieces. i like the character work from the guy who made #3 and the submission from lazur #23. i'm not too much into the "iconized" pieces although they are good too.

.. thanks for the font note.

@ha1flosse: I like what you wrote and how you phrased it. 'It is what it is' is valid for anything else, even beyond art. Only later, when there's someone who looks at it, comes the evaluation.

(I might submit what I made for the contest... even if it's mostly the result of playing with the new tools... and not of any serious work, like your proposal above. At first, my motivation was just to not have an empty contest gallery, so people will dare to submit something (because they think 'I can do at least as good as that, too' ;-)).)
