Latest strip:

Thursday 24th April 2014, "False Economies"

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, and once again I will be in Aylesbury's Friars Square Shopping Centre supporting our local comic book shop. We're giving away signed 'Elvie' prints to anyone who arrives with a copy of Linux Voice, and we'll also have our 'Monsters, Inked' compilation available to buy - as well as Greys merchandise and other promotions. So if there are any other forumites from the Aylesbury area, do drop by and say hello.

Things may have appeared quiet on the Greys front, but we have been busy behind the scenes. But first I'll catch up a bit, with the penultimate strip of Season 5, "False Economies":

Image

And a link to the last strip from S5:

Thursday 8th May 2014,"Honey I Shrunk the Fantastic Voyage into Inner Space!"

8th of May! MAY!? Just what have we been up to for the past four months?

First, we've been continuing to create our 'Elvie' strip for Linux Voice magazine. A few of those are now on our website, with the source files in our Github repository.

Secondly, we've been catching up with our backlog of French translations. We now have all of Season 2 translated - in addition to all of S1, S3 & S4 and most of S5. Huge thanks to Sam, our French translator, for the amazing amount of work he's done!

Finally, we were having trouble keeping up towards the end of Season 5, so some strips went online without Easter Eggs and SVG files. This has now been rectified, so all 139 Greys strips on our site have Inkscape SVG files you can download, each of which contains at least one Easter Egg.

We've started work on Season 6 now, but the struggles of S5 have shown that we can't continue to hit a fortnightly deadline - not if we want to keep the standards up and continue to produce ever more elaborate Easter Eggs. So S6 strips will be posted on an "as they're ready" basis, rather than a strict time scale.

One final thing: we're going to have a table at Oggcamp in Oxford (UK) on 4th & 5th October. It's a "Free Culture unconference", featuring Free Software, Free Culture works, open hardware, 3D printing, and a few Creative Commons comics ;)

I've just posted Sam's final Season 5 French translation to our website. Meaning that, of our 139 Greys comics, he has managed to translate 138 of them, complete with commentaries and Easter Eggs! An incredible achievement for just one man in his spare time, and we can't thank him enough.

At last, Season 6 has begun...

Previous strip (last one of Season 5), "Honey I Shrunk the Fantastic Voyage into Inner Space!":

Latest strip, the first of Season 6:

Tuesday 14th October 2014: "Super Troopers"

Note that we are no longer sticking to a fortnightly schedule, so strips will appear on an ad-hoc basis, as and when they're ready. If you find the wait between strips to be too long, why not take a look at some of the previous 139, or download the Inkscape SVG files to go hunting for the many and varied Easter Eggs that we've hidden therein.

By creating the 'Elvie' strip for Linux Voice, we've managed to turn a small profit this year. We've donated just over 10% of it to the Inkscape Hackfest fund, and I've also posted a blog entry about where the rest of the money went, and the current state of our other comic projects.

It's been far too long since we posted a new Greys comic* so here's something we put on our site a few weeks ago, to coincide with the end of Game of Thrones:

Image

I know most people don't bother going looking for the Easter Eggs, but this one does contain one of my favourites to date. Inkscape's not the right tool to go looking for this one, though.

* We haven't been idle: we've produced an Elvie strip every month, first for Linux Voice, and more recently for Linux (Pro) Magazine), for over 5 years now.

Thanks. We are still drawing The Greys - but very, very slowly! Most of our comic creating time is spent on our 'Elvie' comic strip, which appears in Linux Pro magazine, and makes us enough money to keep the lights on at the website.

We're now on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/peppertop

Here's the obligatory pitch video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYZ_L1grhk0

If you like The Greys in particular, we plan to reveal the secrets of all the Easter eggs to our patrons. Every Greys strip has at least one Easter egg, and although the earlier ones are a little tame, later strips include stupid amounts of extra content - sometimes there's more in the Easter eggs than the main strip itself! If you don't want to become a patron, but still fancy finding some Easter eggs, we'll be making a series of posts about the techniques and software you'll need to find them, which will be generally available whether you're a patron or not. The first one, which gives a little history of why we ended up putting Easter eggs in the strips in the first place, is now on our page: https://www.patreon.com/posts/29383268

Another new strip: this one is to celebrate International Thunderbirds Day (which is a thing, apparently).
