copy and object and paste results in larger border

Postby workinonit » Fri Jan 08, 2016 7:30 am

I copy and paste an object and the pasted object (red square)has a border outside the original (blue square)? Not sure what is happening.

See attached file.

thanks for the help...

Guessing game time...

Screenshots were taken in no filters display mode.
The one object inside the blue square was put in a group and the group got filtered, blurred most likely.
Then, when made the screenshot, you were inside the group, selecting the black rectangle itself.

After that, you selected other objects outside the group -thus exiting it-, and then selected the filtered group instead of the rectangle, which you copied and pasted from the clipboard, and realised a larger bounding box on the pasted object -even though you could have the same bounding box as before by entering the group.

Or something similar, black rectangle grouped on top with a larger white/transparent one.
Or more likely with one duplicant square with a white/transparent stroke.

And so on.

Some notes generally speaking.
You would probably better be using duplicating instead -so you don't duplicate the defs like filters-.
Check the status bar on the bottom to see what's going on.
Change display mode to have another look.

If you base your work on the bounding box/object's shape itself,
try using snapping and/or
change to geometric bounding box in the preferences (Shift+Ctrl+D).

As again, if you share the file we could take a look -probably it's not a rendering bug.

Yes, if you could share the SVG file, please. And also, please tell us step by step what you're doing. Try not to condense your explanation, and give us the "long" version.

Here is the .svg file. Original object on the left. Copied object on the right.

In regards to the explanation. I created a square and then a small circle. I applied the difference to it to remove the circle from the square. I copy the square object and paste and it has a border greater than the orginal object. So if I align them side by side, there is a gap of whitespace in between them.

This is happening in multiple projects. Its a pain to have to go through the whole process so that I can get things to align. So far it has just happened to simple things but I can see this being a problem with complex objects.

Yup, that was a filter.

The origin of the problem was that you had set up a layer with a lighten blending mode.

Svg doesn't have layers, inkscape implements that feature by using groups so technically your object was an object inside a filtered group.
By copy/pasting, to preserve the look the object inherits the same filter as the layer -group- had.

You could drop the lighten blending mode/using of filters/switch to geometric bounding box etc.
(Personally I hardly ever changed the layer blending mode in a drawing.)

(How to fix: open layers dialog: Shift+Ctrl+L, then click on the layer, and for blend mode, select 'normal')

I think I must have done that accidentally. Thank you.

As of 0.92 I had this same problem in a more serious way. I had created a layer for darkened effects, intentionally, but the proceeded to add more stuff to this layer instead of my base layer. When I noticed this I moved these items to the right layer. I then started to get these problems but some regrouping solved it sometimes. But then it kept reoccurring and on most of my items. I finally found this post and found out what is causing it. The workaround is helping but I'm having to apply it on individual groups all over my page and is very annoying. I also have to not use darken now as it seems to not be reliable at all. Is this not flagged as a bug? Has it still not been fixed? Am fairly new to Inkscape so haven't reported it myself but if I am not alone then I think I will have to.

Have you tried switching to geometrical bounding box in the settings? Edit > Preferences > Tools
