How to cut out shape from a layer

Postby jarr25 » Wed May 16, 2018 9:25 pm

Jesus christ, can you guys help with this, because I'm fed up. I want to do a simple thing. Cut out this purple circle inside "O" letter. How to do that? I've tried by doing another shape and use optins in Path menu, but without success.

It sounds like you're on the right track!

I can't determine enough info from your screenshot to make this a short message. My best guess is that the purple ellipse either might not be the right kind of object, or possibly it's Grouped with the other objects.

Select the purple ellipse and then look at the status bar, to find out what kind of object it is. Once we know what kind of object it is, we can tell you exactly what to do. If you want to keep trying it on your own, here are some tips.

If the status bar says "Group of x number of objects....", you need to click Ungroup, until the status bar says there are no more groups to ungroup.
If the status bar says "Ellilpse (or Circle or Path) in group g1234....", then you need to deselect the purple object, and select the whole group. Then Ungroup, as explained above.

If the status bar says "Circle...." or "Ellipse..." or "Path...." then you are ready to use a path operation. If it says anything else, then it depends on what it is, as to what you need to do.

Note that if it says "Image....." then a path operation won't work at all. In that case, the only way to do it would be with clipping. (unless you want to vectorize it) But I'll think positively, and move on to the path operation.

Assuming that white object on top is the shape of the hole you want, then move it into place.
Select the purple object and the white object.
Path menu > Difference

Let us know how it goes :D

Because it´s a stock photo he tries to drill a hole into I believe he wants something like this:

@brynn , it is a picture. Normally I would just use photoshop or corel but I run off all of trials available

Guys, no offence to you, but Inkscape sucks in this section, this is simple thing - just cut from picture. :)

Path -> Diffrence, doesn't work - it just connect this two objects together - but it doesn't give me transparency.

@Polygon
Yesy it is just a photo.
I am not able to do that, what you have shown me in the gif;(

So I have putted white shape onto the base picture.
Then I have made a rectangle and placed it below "O letter".
I am unable to go further. Whatever I'm doing it doesn't work.

I think I'm going to install some software which will allow me to do it normally.

Thank you both guys, for addressing my issue, it helps a lot, knowing that Inkscape have a community willing to help :)

There are several free bitmap editors available, any of which would do the job. You might want to try The GIMP (http://gimp.org) or Paint.Net (https://www.getpaint.net/download.html).

You're trying to use a vector graphics program to manipulate a bitmap image. It's not really the right tool for the job, so it's hardly surprising that you're finding it tricky.

(That said, I've long argued that SVG needs an "inverse clip" option, that would have made this a fairly trivial process)

Sure you can use a dedicated raster image editor, but Inkscape is quite willing to help you here.
Maybe that´s a bit clearer than the gif:

(The image file size limitation for uploads of this board are ridiculous. )

Yes, I did wonder if it might be a raster image. I would probably use clipping, rather than masking, since clipping is exactly the same thing as using masking without any gradient. Although in the end, I don't think it really matters to the image.

You might need to delete some of your older attachments. You can do that in your user control panel. According to this message, we each have 50 mb of attachment space. But I've never been entirely clear if that's 50 per month, or 50 total. It seems to me that I must have reached it a long time ago, but I still can upload attachments. Although I do get the "too large" error more and more often.

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1904#p9806

Unfortunately, the only way to find out your total, is to go in there and add them up. And then you have to convert kb to mb, which always confuses my old brain. I never have gotten around to doing that, since I have 12 pages of attachments (25 per page). Maybe I'll find some time later today.....we'll see.

Fortunately, we'll soon have all the room we need for attachments, when we finally have the new forum.

Off topic:

Yep, I added up all my attachments. Either I'm totally shocked, because the total is far less than I expected; or I didn't make the conversion properly. I used a website's conversion feature to do it, so I think the math is right.

Came up with 14685.17 kb, which apparently converts to approx 14 mb, give or take, depending if you use 1 kb = 1000 bytes or 1024 bytes. But approx 14 mb with emphasis on "approx".

So there must be a limit on the size of a single attachment. It can probably be changed, if we wanted to (now that we have access to the admin panel).

I've checked the settings in the Admin panel. The forum as a whole has a limit of 1GB, with the limit on each individual file being a paltry 256KB. I can't see an obvious per-user quota, but it could be buried somewhere in a less-than-obvious place.

In theory I could increase the upload limit, but there's nowhere that gives a grand total showing how close to the 1GB limit we are. As we don't own the host machine it would be bad form to increase that global limit without permission. So, as poor as 256KB is these days, I think it'll stay like that for now rather than risk hitting the global limit sooner.

Still off topic:
Another reason for switching to SMF someday. These settings are so easy in SMF. I did see a phpBB admin panel - had access to one for about a week once. So I know how things that I consider so simple on SMF are like torture on phpBB.

You're probably right not to change anything for now. It sounds like you've found some kind of upper level there, rather than just for attachments.

Thanks for looking though :D
